The Spiritual Exercises are divided into four "weeks"—not literally weeks, but “stages”
— each with accompanying prayer, visualizations, reflections, and spiritual exercises.
These four stages include consideration of God's creative love and compassion the complex reality of human sin; imaginative contemplations on the life and ministry of Jesus, on his passion, death and resurrection. They involve different ways of praying leading beyond the discursive or analytical approach and into a contemplative and intuitive ‘being with’.
They are for those who long to receive the love of God more profoundly, to know Jesus more intimately, to love Him more deeply, and follow Him more closely; for those who seek to be formed through Christ into their True Self, for growth in discernment and for a greater spiritual freedom.
